NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio’s Statement on the Murder of Dr. George Tiller
Cleveland, Ohio – Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, today issued the following statement on the murder of Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas. “There is no greater love that someone can show than to give his life in the service of others. Prior to being gunned down at his church this morning, Dr. Tiller endured years of violence, threats and intimidation because of the abortion services that he provided to women. Despite having been shot in 1993, Dr. Tiller never wavered in his commitment to providing critically necessary abortion services and other reproductive health care to women and their families. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Tiller’s family, friends and colleagues. “Dr. Tiller’s murder was undoubtedly intended to intimidate the brave and courageous doctors and other professionals who are part of the reproductive-health centers that serve women across America. We want them to know that they have our support as they move forward in providing these essential services in the aftermath of this tragic event. “The man who murdered Dr. Tiller must be brought to justice. The authorities must send a clear message that these types of attacks will be prosecuted fully and swiftly. “We call on opponents of a woman’s right to choose to condemn this action completely and absolutely. They must stop characterizing doctors who provide abortion care as murders. Leaders of the anti-abortion movement must cease their irresponsible and incendiary rhetoric. The debate over abortion rights can and should be made in a thoughtful and respectful manner. “What happened today in Wichita must not turn into a wave of violence targeting abortion providers and the women for whom they provide care. Women accessing their legal right to abortion—and the providers who make this possible—should never be targets of violence or intimidation.” Contact: Kellie Copeland 330-524-1577 ####
