Cleveland, OH – Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, issued the following statement on President Obama's selection of federal appeals court Judge Sonia Sotomayor to succeed retiring Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court. “President Obama has made a historic nomination in his selection of Judge Sotomayor, a jurist with a distinguished legal career. Furthermore, Judge Sotomayor’s background and record indicate that she has a strong understanding of the ways in which the law affects the lives of everyday Americans,” Copeland said. “We are encouraged by the strong support she receives from her peers and other legal scholars and the fact that the Senate has twice confirmed her for federal judgeships. We look forward to a full exploration of her views on the right to privacy and Roe v. Wade during the confirmation process.”
