Pro-Choice Candidates Elected from the White House to the Statehouse
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Celebrates Victories across the State Pro-choice candidates elected from the White House to the Statehouse Cleveland, OH. – Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, the political leader of the pro-choice movement in Ohio with more than 20,000 member activists across the state, called last night’s victories an historic win for women’s freedom and privacy.
“It was a long road and much was at stake. Abortion and reproductive rights were once again important campaign issues,” Copeland said. “Pro-choice Ohioans responded by supporting candidates who share our values and our commitment to protecting the right to choose. Pro-choice Ohioans played a major role in the historic election of President-elect Obama Our supporters also successfully fought to return the Ohio House to pro-choice leadership for the first time since 1994 and to keep the Ohio Attorney General’s office pro-choice.” Copeland remarked, “We are so proud of our members who volunteered during this campaign and whose support made it possible for us to persuade key swing voters to support pro-choice candidates across Ohio. We look forward to working with our new pro-choice officials in protecting women’s health and privacy.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio played a unique role in persuading Independent and Republican pro-choice women voters to cross party lines to support pro-choice candidates. In 2008, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio and its volunteers contacted nearly 100,000 households across the state reminding voters what was at stake in this election. In addition, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio endorsed three candidates for the Ohio House. The organization also mobilized more than 20,000 online activists to engage in campaigns and vote for pro-choice candidates. ###
