Anti-Choice Legislator Re-Introduces Bill to Criminalize Abortion

Posted: 07/11/2007

Emboldened by Supreme Court decision in Federal Abortion Ban case,
legislators focus their sights on
Roe v. Wade
Columbus, OH- Kellie Copeland, the executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, said Rep. Brinkman’s decision to re-introduce his bill to ban abortion reinforces that he is out-of-touch with Ohio mainstream values.

“In 2006, Ohio voters made clear they wanted a new direction for the choice debate by electing Gov. Ted Strickland who has pledged to veto any ban on abortion,” Copeland said.  “Unfortunately, Rep. Brinkman has chosen to ignore Ohioans’ clear message and re-introduce an unpopular and dangerous bill to criminalize abortion.  Just as we did last year, pro-choice Ohioans will vocally oppose this bill.”

Copeland continued that the Supreme Court decision to uphold the Federal Abortion Ban has emboldened anti-choice legislators across the country to try again to attack safe, legal abortion.

“This is a reminder to all Americans that Supreme Court decisions do not occur in a vacuum.  While President Bush may be term-limited next year, we will be left with his Supreme Court nominees for years to come.  In order to change the tide it is imperative that we continue our work to elect pro-choice candidates in Ohio and across the country in 2008,” Copeland said.

Last year, Ohio anti-choice legislators in the House attempted to push through a bill that would make performing an abortion a felony, without exception. The bill was defeated in committee.
