Pro-choice Ohioans Cheer Strickland, Other Victories
Election results are a major win for the values of freedom and privacyCleveland, OH – Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, called tonight’s pro-choice victories a major win and a clear sign that voters are tired of the divisive attacks on a woman’s right to choose in the legislature and the governor’s mansion. “We are proud to have supported such a strong slate of pro-choice candidates. Voters clearly want strong leadership to protect women’s freedom and privacy and oppose politicians interfering in our personal, private decisions,” Copeland said. “Ken Blackwell ran on a platform of outlawing abortion and refused to answer questions about his position on contraceptives. Pro-choice Ohioans overwhelmingly rejected his candidacy because of his extreme positions on these issues. Ted Strickland’s victory demonstrates that voters want a leader who will protect our freedom while uniting Ohioans behind commonsense, common-ground proposals, like The Ohio Prevention First Act which will ensure better access to birth control and honest sex education, that would prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion without threatening women’s health.” NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio also provided extensive volunteer support for Rep. Sherrod Brown for the U.S. Senate and Mary Jo Kilroy, a member of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, in the 15th Congressional District. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is a leading force in the election of pro-choice candidates, promoting pro-choice policies, and mobilizing pro-choice voters. As part of its political program, the group mobilized 15,488 pro-choice supporters and activists to vote for pro-choice candidates throughout the state. The volunteer network participated in get-out-the-vote efforts across the state, including phone banking and door-to-door canvassing. Contact: Kellie Copland, 216.283.2180 or 330-524-1577 ###
