Where is Blackwell on Prevention?
Blackwell should state his position on the Ohio Prevention First Act Columbus, OH - NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, the state’s leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, called on gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell to state his position on the Ohio Prevention First Act, a commonsense piece of legislation that would prevent unintended pregnancy and reduce the need for abortion. “The Ohio Prevention First Act is a comprehensive bill to help women and their families prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion,” said Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. “Voters deserve to know if Ken Blackwell’s extreme position on women’s reproductive healthcare includes opposition to increased access to birth control and honest sex education. Ohioans want sensible, effective ways to prevent unintended pregnancies, instead of divisive attacks on women’s freedom such as the Ohio Abortion Ban (HB 228) which would outlaw all abortions without exception—not even to save the life of the woman for in cases of rape or incest, which Blackwell strongly supports.” Copeland continued, “The majority of Ohioans want abortion to be kept safe, legal, and rare. The voters of Ohio want our elected officials to back a prevention-based, commonsense agenda we can all agree on. Ted Strickland has made it clear that he supports this commonsense approach; Blackwell should state his position on these initiatives. Why is he hiding?” The Ohio Prevention First Act (HB 588 and SB 328) is designed to provide a variety of services and programs to the citizens of Ohio so that they can prevent unintended pregnancy. These programs include teen pregnancy prevention, comprehensive sex-education, increased funding for family planning programs, an emergency contraception education program and requirements that insurance companies provide equal coverage for prescription contraceptives.
