Blackwell Continues Attacks on a Woman’s Right to Choose

Modified: 09/06/2006

Debate comments reiterated to voters that he supports the extreme ban on abortion - without exceptions even for rape or incest survivors or to protect the woman’s health

Columbus, OH—During the gubernatorial debate yesterday, Ken Blackwell reiterated his disregard for women’s reproductive freedom and privacy, stating that he is opposed to abortion in all circumstances – even to save the life of the woman.

“Blackwell’s radical position that abortion is never medically necessary - even to save the life of a woman - shows a complete lack of compassion for women, their doctors, and their families. I believe this decision is one best made by doctors, not Ken Blackwell,” said Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. “If Ken Blackwell becomes governor, Ohioans now know that he and his political allies in the legislature will interfere in their personal decision making.”

Copeland continued, “Voters are tired of the extreme divisiveness that Blackwell represents - and that’s why they will elect Ted Strickland as our next governor. The public wants a leader who will focus on commonsense ways to prevent unintended pregnancies, like better access to birth control, without jeopardizing women’s access to reproductive health care. Yesterday’s debate clearly showed that Strickland is the mainstream choice for governor. ”

Currently, State Rep. Tom Brinkman has introduced House Bill 228 which will ban all abortions in Ohio, without exception. This bill will also prohibit the transportation of women across state lines to get an abortion.
