Abortion Restriction Bill Sent to Ohio House Health Committee

Posted: 05/25/2005

BILL THAT WOULD RESTRICT WOMEN’S ACCESS TO ABORTION SENT TO HOUSE HEALTH COMMITTEE

Columbus, OH--NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, the state’s leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, today expressed its opposition to HB 239. This bill would, if enacted, would make it more difficult for Ohio women to exercise their constitutional right to choose by restricting access to abortion. Specifically, the bill would impose bans on the use of public funds, employees, and facilities for abortions and contains no exceptions to save the health of the woman or in the instances of rape or incest.

Kellie Copeland, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio said, “While the expressed intent of this bill is to promote childbirth it does nothing to improve prenatal care or other health care services for children born to low-income women. If the authors of this bill, and other anti-choice legislators, are really intent on reducing the need for abortion, the logical first step is to prevent unintended pregnancies in the first place. They should be introducing legislation that encourages comprehensive, age appropriate sex education, provides better access to family planning services, including emergency contraception, and insurance coverage for contraception instead of wasting taxpayers’ money introducing unconstutional legislation like this.”

HB 239 was introduced on May 4 and assigned to the House Health Committee yesterday, May 24.
