NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Calls on Senator DeWine to Oppose “Nuclear Option”
Pro-choice advocacy group mobilizes activists across the state to disarm dangerous power grab by far right. (Cleveland, OH) – NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, the state's leading advocate of personal privacy and a woman's right to choose, has shifted into high gear in its efforts to disarm the “nuclear option.” Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has indicated that a vote on this unprecedented abuse of power will likely occur early next week. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio strongly urges Senator DeWine to stand up for the fair, independent judiciary envisioned by nation’s founders and oppose this effort by the far right to radically restructure the nation’s courts. “President Bush and Senator Frist are preparing an unprecedented rules change that would reduce the U.S. Senate to a mere rubber stamp for President Bush’s plan to push out-of-touch, radical judicial nominees into lifetime appointments,” said Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. “We hope that Senator DeWine sees the folly behind this dangerous partisan power grab and joins the growing ranks of senators from both sides of the aisle who want to maintain checks and balances to protect individual freedom.” NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio has made educating the public about the nuclear option a top priority, and has collected over 500 petition signatures, delivered to Senator DeWine’s district office in Columbus. The group has also educated local voters on the tradition of the filibuster and the need for a fair and truly independent judiciary, with movie and discussion nights around the state.
