Ohio Residents to Thank Abortion Providers

Posted: 03/07/2005

In Honor of National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers Pro-Choice Activists Deliver Thank You Messages to Area Doctors

(Columbus, OH) NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, the state’s leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, today launched a week-long effort thanking area doctors who provide abortions. The National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers is March 10, the anniversary of the 1993 death of Dr. David Gunn. Dr. Gunn was the first abortion provider murdered by anti-choice zealots.

Throughout the week, as a celebration of the life and work of Dr. Gunn, and the many others who continue to put their lives in danger to make reproductive choice a reality, local activists will be delivering thank you packages with over 150 letters from supporters across the state.

“It is important that we recognize the vital work these doctors and clinic staff do,” said Kellie Copeland, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. “Every day they face angry protestors outside their doors; this week they will be greeted with grateful, friendly faces.”

Ensuring that women in Ohio are able to access abortion services is not an easy job. Ninety-one percent of counties in Ohio have no provider, requiring some women to travel hundreds of miles to receive treatment. Nor is it a safe job. Over 3,500 acts of violence have been committed against clinics since 1990. This includes 7 murders, 17 attempted murders and 16 bombings.
