Ohio Senate Republicans Put Far Right Ideology Ahead of Women’s Health
Columbus, OH – By giving in to far-right pressure to curb access to contraceptives, the Senate Republican Leadership has blocked legislation that would expand access to contraceptive services in Ohio, charged NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, the state’s largest advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose. Kellie Copeland, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio said, “The actions of the Senate Republicans prove once again that they are more concerned about the views of the far right than the health of Ohio’s women. The Senate Republicans are ignoring a golden opportunity help the millions of women in Ohio who are in need of contraceptive services and supplies.” Copeland continued,”Increased access to contraception would dramatically lower the number of unintended pregnancies in Ohio, and would be particularly beneficial for victims of sexual assault. However, those concerns were outweighed by the objections of a small number of ideological extremists who oppose contraception.” Pro-choice Ohioans have sent over 2,200 e-mails expressing their outrage to the Ohio Senate. In addition, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio has gathered over 500 petition signatures in support of the Contraceptive Equity Bill. Over the next few months the group will hold town hall meetings and go canvassing door-to-door to gather additional signatures to demonstrate the overwhelming support for this measure in Ohio.
