Access to Emergency Contraception Threatened by Ohio Legislature
State Representative Faber introduced a bill in the Ohio House that would allow pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for Emergency Contraception, Mifepristone/Ru-486 or any other drug that they do not feel morally comfortable with dispensing. Ohio women should never be denied access to Emergency Contraception or other legal medications that they need. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio does not object to individuals exercising their personal beliefs, as long as it doesn't prevent women from accessing the legal medical procedures and medications that they need. Medical institutions, including pharmacies, have an obligation to provide legal medical care, regardless of individual beliefs and the law should require that this distinction be made. Medical institutions should have policies and procedures in place so that if one of their employees opts out of filing a prescription or participating in a proceedure, there are other employees who can immediately fill that role.
