Study Shows Cleveland Sex Ed Program Making Positive Gains
By Bill Rice, Cleveland WCPN 90.3FM, Ideastream. [you can listen to the entire radio report from Cleveland's WCPN 90.3FM on their website.] The just completed study found students who participated in the Responsible Sexual Behavior, or RSB program had better knowledge of sexual matters than those who didn’t – knowledge of things like good touch vs. bad touch in lower grades, to use of condoms at the high school level. They also had improved attitudes and skills, such as considering pregnancy prevention important, or being able to talk openly with sexual partners. Mayor Frank Jackson says the study, while it doesn’t measure specific outcomes of pregnancy or STDs, nonetheless shows that the RSB program is worth continuing. Jackson: “And I’m confident that you will beging to see a trend of right decision-making, and you will begin to see the negative statistics go down.” The study also found that a large majority of parents of teens who received the Responsible Sexual Behavior instruction viewed it favorably, and engaged more in frank discussions about sexual matters with their kids.
