Bills could spur abortion challenges

Experts on both sides of the abortion debate say the purpose of the proposed legislation is to provoke court challenges that would eventually lead to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. The 1973 decision struck down state laws that banned abortion. Abortion foes are hopeful that with two new, conservative Justices on the Supreme Court - John Roberts Jr. and Samuel Alito Jr. - that decision could be overturned. Ohio Rep. Tom Brinkman Jr., R-Cincinnati, said legislators postponed considering the bill he filed last April until after the two new justices were confirmed. Brinkman's bill is similar to legislation filed in the Kentucky House this week by Rep. Addia Wuchner, R-Burlington.
