Ohio House Votes Against Women’s Health

Votes to Defund Family Planning and Fund Anti-Choice Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Columbus, OH – Tonight the Ohio House approved a state budget that includes provisions that would defund Planned Parenthood and other family planning centers and funnel an undisclosed amount of taxpayer dollars to unregulated anti-choice crisis pregnancy centers. A measure to ban the teaching of comprehensive sex education was removed from the budget.

"Today the Ohio House voted against the women of this state” said Kellie Copeland, executive director of the Ohio-based organization. "The Ohio House passed a budget that, if it becomes law, will restrict access to contraceptives, cancer screenings and other vital health care. Ohio women need Governor Kasich to stop these dangerous attacks on women’s health care. We need him to speak out against these budget provisions and to line-item veto them if they reach his desk.”

A year-long investigation by NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Foundation into crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) revealed widespread use of medically inaccurate information designed to coerce women from making health care decisions they believe are best for them. Key findings in the 31-page report include:

  • 47% gave misleading information on the connection between mental health problems and abortion; 38% provided false information about the connection between breast cancer, infertility and abortion.
  • None provided referrals or information on contraceptive services aside from natural family planning or abstinence.
  • 38% of CPCs offered free ultrasounds, however, 95% did not mention that their ultrasound was for non-diagnostic purposes and limited in scope

The reprioritization of family planning funding would defund Planned Parenthood and other family planning providers, many of whom serve the poor in rural counties. This proposal will wreak havoc on thousands of patients that rely on these medical care facilities, and could result in eight counties losing access to subsidized family planning services entirely.
