Act for Our Children's Future
With skyrocketing rates of sexually transmitted diseases among teens in Ohio and across the country why are schools across the state still just telling young people not to have sex? Unfortunately it is because the Ohio Revised Code tells them to. The Act for Our Children's Future would change that and require schools that choose to teach sexuality education to teach it in an abstinence-based comprehensive manor that deals both with staying abstinent until you are ready to deal with the possible consequences of sexual activity, but also teaches students medically accurate, age-appropriate lessons about how to prevent transmission of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy when you do become sexually active. The Act for Our Children's Future had its first hearing on 12/1/2009 with the bill's sponsor delivering sponsor testimony. Read Representative Slesnick's (D-Canton) testimony to learn why he wanted to introduce this important bill. Proponent testimony occurred on 2/23/2010. It was a long afternoon, but filled with amazing testimony from people of all ages from across the state. See below for the list of people who provided in person testimony for the bill and to read their testimony. Stay tuned for additional updates. This legislation will be reintroduced in 2011.
