Ohioans are still waiting...
Did you know that even as the legislature continues its relentless attacks on a woman's right to choose, they are just sitting on a bill that will increase access to birth control and comprehensive sex education? The Ohio Prevention First Act is a bill that will reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in Ohio, but this commonsense common ground legislation has been sitting in the Ohio House since 2006 without a single vote in committee. Enough is Enough. During the summer of 2008 more than 120 volunteers and postcard captains helped us gather more than 2,100 postcards to deliver to the Chairman of the Ohio House Health Committee, Rep. Lynn Wachtmann. Here are some pictures from our efforts!
We delivered the postcards on November 12, 2008 to Chairman Wachtmann's office. You can see the pictures and video of the delivery and read all about it here. Within hours of our delivery the chairman anounced he would hold sponsor testimony on the bill the following week, and on November 19th the FIRST EVER hearing on the Ohio Prevention First Act in the Ohio House occured. In 2009, the Ohio Prevention First Act received several hearings, but was not voted on before session adjourned in December 2010. But we are not giving up! This legislation will be reintroduced in 2011. Want to help get this commonground legislation passed? You can do lots of things to help support this campaign. Here are just a few examples: Sign the on-line petition. Encourage others to join the campaign. Call your legislator and tell them you support this bill. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper explaining why the bill is important and why we are demanding hearings on it. Donate! Your dollars will help support the campaign and all of our other initiatives.
