In November 2006 Ohio elected a pro-choice governor as well as a pro-choice attorney general, secretary of state and treasurer for the first time in 16 years. Two years later we followed those victories with victories in the Ohio House which gave us our first pro-choice Speaker of the House in more than a decade. Unfortunately, even though there is a democratic majority in the Ohio House we still do not have a pro-choice majority in that chamber, and the Ohio Senate continues to be controlled by a 2/3rds anti-choice majority.
We also saw great victories on the federal level in 2008. We now have a pro-choice President, and Ohio now has additional pro-choice members of Congress and a pro-choice Senator, elected in 2006. Like at the state level, the democratic majority in the U.S. Senate and House does not mean that we have a pro-choice majority so there is still plenty of work to be done.
To find out if your Ohio legislators are pro-choice, check out our Ohio House and Senate Scorecards. These scorecards report how each member of the Ohio House and Senate voted on reproductive rights bills during the 2005-2006 legislative session. There were no scored votes during the 2007-2008 session, and therefore we did not produce a scorecard for that legislative session. If you have questions about your Ohio legislator's stance on choice please feel free to contact us at 614-221-2594, 1-800-GO-NARAL or info@ProChoiceOhio.org.
