Support the Compassionate Assistance for Rape Emergencies Act!
Yesterday, State Representative Dan Stewart reintroduced HB 560, (the Compassionate Assistance for Rape Emergencies Act) in the Ohio House. This important bill will ensure access to emergency contraception (EC) and sexually transmitted disease prevention services to ALL sexual assault survivors in Ohio hospital emergency rooms. In 2007 the NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Foundation conducted a survey of hospital emergency rooms in Ohio and, of the hospitals who participated, almost 20% of them did not guarantee access to emergency contraception for sexual assault victims in their emergency room. This is outrageous. No woman should ever have to face a pregnancy following a sexual assault because she was denied a medication that could have prevented it. HB 560 is commonsense legislation that would increase access to medically necessary services to women at a time of great need, and we thank Representative Stewart for his leadership on this issue.
